Picking the right kind of QR code

Static or dynamic, and which payload format actually does what you want.

The type of code you choose has more consequence than the design, because it decides what happens years later. A static code contains your content directly and works forever. A dynamic code contains a redirect owned by somebody else.

That distinction is usually presented as a feature comparison. It is really a question about failure modes: a dynamic code is editable and analytic, and it also dies the day the redirect service does — every printed copy at once.

Alongside that sits the narrower question of payload format. A vCard and a MeCard both store contact details, but one produces a far denser code than the other, and density is scannability.

What you'll learn here

  • What dynamic codes genuinely buy you, and the dependency you take on in exchange.
  • A decision rule that settles the choice in about a minute.
  • The middle path most people miss: static codes pointed at a redirect you own.
  • When to prefer MeCard over vCard, and why payload length is a design decision.

Common questions

Can a static QR code be edited after printing?
No. The destination is encoded into the pattern itself, so changing it means generating and printing a new code. This is the main argument for pointing static codes at a URL on a domain you control.
Do QR codes expire?
Static codes never expire — there is nothing to expire. Dynamic codes stop working whenever their redirect service stops resolving, which may be when a subscription lapses or a vendor shuts down.
Which contact format should I use on a business card?
MeCard if you only need name, phone, email and website, because it produces a much shorter payload and therefore a sparser, easier-to-scan code. Use vCard when you genuinely need the extra fields.
